For poets whose dates are unknown, the bars are based on estimated years (including those marked "c." or "?") or on the years they appear in records of official posts, poetry contests and the like. When the recorded period is shorter than 20 years, the bar covers the 20 years before the year of death (or, if that is unknown, the year of the last record). For Sarumaru Dayū, Priest Kisen and Ono no Komachi, whose dates are not known at all, the bars show the period of activity given in dictionaries and similar works (for Sarumaru Dayū, the theory that he lived in the reign of Empress Genmei).
