What is the Hyakunin Isshu?
The Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (小倉百人一首) is a classical Japanese anthology of 100 waka poems by 100 different poets, compiled around 1235 by the poet and critic Fujiwara no Teika (1162–1241). It spans roughly six centuries of Japanese poetry, from Emperor Tenji (7th century) to Emperor Juntoku (13th century).
Each poem follows a strict 5-7-5-7-7 mora structure. Themes range from the beauty of the seasons to love, longing, and the passage of time. The anthology is deeply embedded in Japanese culture — it forms the basis of the popular card game karuta, played widely at New Year.
