Meaning

My home is in the southeast of the capital, and I live here at peace. People say I moved to Mount Uji because I found the world hard to bear — but that is only what others say.

Commentary

Kisen Hōshi retreated to Mount Uji, to the southeast of the Heian capital, to lead a life of quiet contemplation.

Rumour had it, however, that he had escaped to the mountains out of a weariness with the world.

Perhaps the poem holds a quiet resolve to live true to himself, undisturbed by the world's opinions.
