Meaning

Even the ancient gods never heard of this — the Tatsuta River, dyeing its waters a deep crimson with fallen maple leaves.

Commentary

This poem is said to have been composed in longing for Fujiwara no Takako, who became a consort of Emperor Seiwa. The two had been lovers, but when Takako entered the imperial household, their love became impossible.

Ariwara no Narihira attached this poem to a folding screen depicting the autumn leaves of the Tatsuta River. Although it appears to celebrate the beauty of the autumn scene, it is said to carry hidden feelings for Takako.
