Meaning

Since things have come to this, it no longer matters. Even if I must sacrifice everything, I still want to meet you.

Commentary

This poem is said to have been sent to Fujiwara no Hōshi, a consort of the Retired Emperor Uda, after news of their affair became public gossip.

The word "miwotsukushi" means a channel marker (a post set in shallow water to guide boats), but it also sounds like "mio wo tsukushi" — "to give all of oneself." The poet uses this wordplay to express his resolve to sacrifice himself for a forbidden love.
