Kentoku-kō

Meaning

There is no one who might show even a little compassion. I feel as though my life will simply fade away, just like that.

Commentary

The contrast here is stark: the speaker holds high rank and influence at court — "Kentoku-kō" was the posthumous title of Fujiwara no Koremasa, a Minister — yet he cannot name a single person who would mourn his passing. Status and position are no antidote for a heart broken by unrequited love.

This poem belongs to the tradition of "dying for love" verse that was common in the Heian period. Yet what makes it unusual is its clear-eyed self-awareness: the speaker does not romanticize his suffering but states, with quiet despair, that he will vanish from the world without anyone to grieve him. That lucidity makes the loneliness feel all the more real.
