Meaning

O mountain cherry — feel moved together with me. There is no one else here who knows me but you.

Commentary

The poet is deep in the mountains on ascetic retreat. He addresses the mountain cherry blossoms as his only companion, asking them to share in the feeling of mono no aware (the pathos of things). The solitude is absolute — the flowers are his sole audience, and the poem makes that feel both desolate and oddly beautiful.

Gyōson was a senior Buddhist priest who underwent rigorous austerities on Mt. Ōmine. His poem embodies the loneliness and spiritual intensity of the hermit-poet tradition. This style — finding deep communion with nature in radical solitude — became a touchstone for later poet-monks, especially Saigyō.
