Meaning

All through the night, lost in thought, the dawn will not come. Even the crack of light through the bedroom door seems cold and distant.

Commentary

The crack of light (neya no hima) is the thin line of dawn visible under or through the bedroom door. When you are awake all night waiting for a lover who has not come, even the first light of dawn marks not relief but the final confirmation of abandonment. Dawn here is not hope — it is the close of a failed night.

Priest Shun'e was the son of Minamoto no Toshiyori (poem 74) and was known as a devoted teacher of poetry. He founded a poetry salon at Kamo called the Karin'en, where he mentored many young poets including Kamo no Chōmei. Despite his priestly status, his poetry is predominantly concerned with the ache of love.
